Le nerf de la guerre: 'Loot', 'brass', money (literally what makes war-mongering financially possible).5. Ne pas avoir un nerf: To be 'skint', to be penniless. (Unlike the previous entry for this word, the reference is to 'argent monnayé', i.e. real money in notes and coins, and the word is pronounced nerffe.)
