(Sp. model spelled same [naßáxo], either < Spanish nava 'plain surrounded by mountains' of pre-Roman origin or < Tewa naba 'cultivated field' via Spanish)The largest American Indian group in the United States. They inhabit regions of Arizona, New Mexico, and southeastern Utah. Their language is from the Athapascan group, and their economy is based primarily on agriculture and raising sheep. They are also known for their artwork, including silversmithing, sand painting, and blanket weaving.Alternate form: Navaho. -
7 Navajo Blanket
The original fabric is a native-made blanket, hand woven by the Navajo Indian women from wool yarns, in bright colours and geometrical designs. It was so closely woven as to be waterproof and the fabric was double sided. The principal native types are known under the following terms, which see : - Baghaitloui, Badotlizhi, Bilagai, Ditosi, Diyogi, Nago Nodzi, Nakhar Bicliidi, Yei, Yishbizh, Yistio, Jimas. The commercial imitations are made from strong cotton warps and a low price wool weft. Germany and Belgium supply the bulk of these blankets. -

The upright or vertical loom used by the Navajo Indians in the weaving of their famous rugs or blankets. In this loom the warp threads are held in an upright position by fastening them to two wood beams one at the top and one at the bottom - The top beam being fixed to a tree. The alternate warp threads are fastened to a stick so that they can be divided to form a shed for the weft threads. -
