Горная порода, состоящая преимущественно из тонкодисперсных частиц водных алюмосиликатов и обладающая связующей способностью и термохим. устойчивостью, обеспечивающая получение достаточно прочных, не пригорающих к отливкам формовочных смесей. В литейном произ-ве в кач-ве связующих применяются формовочные глины след, минералогич. групп: монтмориллонитовые, каолинитовые, каолинито-гидрослюдистые и полиминеральные, в к-рых минералогич. составляющая четко не выявлена. Связующее действие ф. г. зависит от ее способности к гидратации, определяемой минералогич. составом и дисперсностью глины, составом обменных катионов. Содержание в ф. г. дисперсных частиц < 22 мкм д. б. > 50 %.
