Малые добавки одного или неск. отд. элементов, в т. ч. в виде соединений, вводимые в расплав стали и сплава без существ. изменения их химич. состава с целью видоизменения морфологии первич. кристаллов, а тж. увеличения дисперсности кристаллиз. фаз. Эффект от такой обработки наз. модифицированием.
По классификации акад. П. А. Ребиндера м. подразделяют на. м. 1-го и 2-го рода. М. 1-го рода — ПАВ (ингибиторы), адсорбир. на поверхности зародышей, возник, в центрах кристаллизации и тормозят их рост, в рез-те появляется большое количество новых зародышей, рост их становится возможным из-за уменьшения концентрации м. на их поверхности. М. первого рода ограниченно растворяются в жидком расплаве, имеют низкие темп-ру плавления и растворимость в тв. р-ре (не более 0,01-0,1 ат. %). М. 2-го рода — т. н. м. инокулирующего действия облегчают образование в расплаве центров кристаллизации, напр, коллоидных частиц, или служат непосредст. дополнит, центрами — зародышами кристаллизации при затвердевании. Такими зародышами могут служить малые частицы (обычно 1-3 мкм) химич. соединений тугоплавких элементов (Ti, Zr, В и др.), имеющих кристаллич. структуру с межат. расстояниями, разнящ. не более чем на 10-15 % (правило П. Д. Данкова). Иногда на этих центрах кристаллиз. фазы, иначе не выделяющиеся в данном расплаве. М. 1-го рода усиливают, а 2-го — уменьшают переохлаждение расплава.

модификаторы флотации
Группа флотац. реагентов, собирающихся на поверхности раздела тв. тело — жидкость; применяются для выделения в ценный продукт к.-л. одного или группы минералов. М. ф. регулируют действие собирателей, усиливая (активаторы) или ослабляя его (депрессоры).
Активаторы — м. ф., непосредст. взаимод. с поверхностью извлек, частиц. Типичные активаторы — соли поливалентных металлов, Na2S, газы и т. д.
Депрессоры (подавители) применяют для улучшения селективности флотации. Д. закрепляются на поверхности определ. минералов и препятствуют адсорбции собирателя на них, а тж. гидрофилизуют поверхность этих минералов и тем самым предотвращают их флотацию одноврем. с др. минералами. Типичные д. — соли неорганич. кислот, содержащие анионы S2~, (SiO3)2~, CN", а тж. известь, углеводы, лигнин, органич. красители, танин и др.
