Santamaría glosses it as the common name of several cacti that produce a prickly pear, especially Opuntia cactus and O. hernandezii, a plant that grows to about ten feet in height and has flattened stalks composed of a series of fleshy, oval-shaped sections covered with spines. The cactus also produces yellow flowers with many petals and spiny, edible fruits that are green when unripe and turn yellow or cherry-colored when they mature. -
