Frappé de plein fouet par la vague numérique, l’appareil photo se convertit. Au début des années 2000, la photo argentique laisse la place à la photo numérique, avec une nouvelle ère pour les photographes et leurs appareils. Le basculement vers le numérique est très rapide. Un seul exemple, celui de la Fnac. En 2000, la Fnac vend 2,5 millions d’appareils photo, presque tous argentiques. En 2005, sur les 5 millions d’appareils photo vendus, 4,7 millions sont numériques. Outre une optique à focale fixe ou variable, un viseur, une mémoire intégrée et un flash électronique incorporé, l’appareil photo numérique dispose d’un écran couleur à cristaux liquides (ou écran LCD: liquid crystal display) permettant d’affiner le cadrage et de voir aussitôt les photos prises. On peut ensuite télécharger les photos dans son ordinateur pour stockage, traitement et envoi par courriel. -

Flickr est un site très populaire permettant de partager, de stocker, de rechercher et d’organiser ses photos. Développé à Vancouver (Canada) par la société Ludicorp et son président Stewart Butterfield, il est lancé en version bêta en février 2004. Son succès est immédiat. Flickr compte 400.000 usagers quand il est racheté par Yahoo! en mars 2005. Il continue de se développer parallèlement à Yahoo! Photos (dont la fermeture est prévue en septembre 2007 aux Etats-Unis et fin 2007 dans les autres pays, avec report des inscrits vers Flickr). En 2004, le moteur de recherche Google met son expertise au service du livre. En octobre 2004, Google lance la première partie de son programme Google Print, établi en partenariat avec les éditeurs pour consulter à l’écran des extraits de livres, puis commander les livres auprès d’une librairie en ligne. La version bêta de Google Print (http://print.google.com/) est mise en ligne en mai 2005. En décembre 2004, Google lance la deuxième partie de son programme Google Print, cette fois-ci à destination des bibliothèques. Il s’agit d’un projet de bibliothèque numérique de 15 millions de livres, qui consisterait à numériser en quelques années les livres de plusieurs grandes bibliothèques. Les premières bibliothèques participantes sont celles des universités du Michigan (dans sa totalité: 7 millions d’ouvrages), de Harvard, de Stanford et d’Oxford, et la New York Public Library. Le coût estimé se situe entre 150 et 200 millions de dollars US (environ 10 dollars par livre) et la durée prévue est de dix ans. En août 2005, ce programme est suspendu pour un temps indéterminé pour cause de conflit avec les éditeurs des livres sous droits. Le programme reprend en août 2006 sous le nouveau nom de Google Book Search (voir la notice précédente). -

Lancé par France Télécom en 1982, le minitel est un terminal permettant la consultation de serveurs à domicile moyennant finances, grâce à un accès par Télétel, le réseau vidéotex français. Cette consultation est fortement encouragée par l’Etat français, qui distribue gratuitement des millions de terminaux. L’opération minitel est un succès, contrairement à des opérations similaires menées dans d’autres pays (Prestel en Angleterre, BX en Allemagne et Alex au Canada) qui, elles, ne remportent pas le succès escompté. A la fin des années 1990, on compte 6 millions de minitels et 20.000 services actifs. Lorsque l’utilisation du web se généralise, de nombreux serveurs minitel sont consultables sur le web ou sont remplacés par des serveurs web, avec les avantages qu’offrent une consultation meilleur marché, une plus grande facilité de navigation et l’ajout de fonctions multimédias. Toutefois, en 2006, il subsiste 2,9 millions de minitels et 5.000 services actifs, preuve que ce service se porte toujours bien malgré la concurrence de l’internet. -

Un nom de domaine est une chaîne de caractères alphanumériques permettant d’identifier un site web, et donc son serveur sur le réseau, au lieu d’une suite de chiffres (correspondant à l’adresse IP – internet protocol) qu’il serait beaucoup plus difficile de mémoriser. Par exemple, le nom de domaine de l’Agence France-Presse (AFP) est: www.afp.com, et la suite de chiffres: 185.65.0.1. Ce sont les serveurs du système des noms de domaine (DNS: domain name system) qui gèrent le trafic sur le réseau mondial. Le système des noms de domaine est régi au niveau international par l’ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). En mai 2007, 120 millions de noms de domaine sont enregistrés auprès de l’ICANN, dont 40 millions avec des extensions de pays (.be,.ca,.ch,.fr,.qa, etc.). L’extension la plus utilisée est.com, avec 62 millions de noms de domaine. -

Créé en 1980 par le RLG (Research Libraries Group), RLIN (Research Libraries Information Network, voir la notice suivante) devient en 2003 le RLG Union Catalog. Le RLG Union Catalog est l’un des deux grands catalogues collectifs mondiaux, l’autre étant WorldCat, géré par OCLC (Online Computer Library Center). En 2003, le RLG Union Catalog comprend 126 millions de notices bibliographiques (correspondant à 42 millions de documents: livres, cartes, manuscrits, films, bandes sonores, etc.) émanant de bibliothèques et centres de documentation situés dans 300 pays différents (dépôts d’archives, bibliothèques de musées, bibliothèques universitaires, bibliothèques publiques, bibliothèques de droit, bibliothèques techniques, bibliothèques d’entreprise, bibliothèques d’art, etc.). Utilisé pour le catalogage, le prêt inter-bibliothèques ou encore le contrôle des archives et des manuscrits, ce catalogue collectif regroupe les notices de tous les organismes adhérents, avec si besoin plusieurs notices pour le même document (et non pas une seule notice par document comme dans WorldCat). 370 langues différentes y sont représentées, avec translittération des notices de documents publiés dans les langues JACKPHY (japonais, arabe, chinois, coréen, persan, hébreu et yiddish) et en cyrillique. En 2004, le RLG Union Catalog comprend 130 millions de notices. Au printemps 2004, une version web de ce catalogue est disponible en accès libre sous le nom de RedLightGreen, suite à une phase pilote lancée en automne 2003. Après trois ans d’activité, le site est fermé en novembre 2006, et le RLG est intégré à OCLC. -
