metal-oxide surge arrester without gaps
arrester having non-linear metal-oxide resistors connected in series and/or in parallel without any integrated series or parallel spark gaps

Surge arresters
To limit the occurrence of over voltages, an over voltage arrester is available upon request.
The encapsulated surge arrester is designed on the basis of metallic oxide conductive resistors.
These blow out if there is an overload, and the system protection turns off the faulty electrical circuit in a controlled manner.
The surge arrester is in single-pole design.
It has its own enclosure sealed by a sealed bushing.
Connections for equipment to monitor the arrester.
The GIS lay out in option of zinc oxide lightning arrester under metal enclosure insulated with gas SF6.
The zinc oxide lightning arrester earths currents of considerable amplitude injected by accidental phenomena: lightning and operating overvoltages.
The non-linear resistance of the zinc oxide maintains a residual voltage lower than the GIS insulation voltage during the flow of high currents.
An impulse counter records the number of times high current passes through the conductor and the maximum amplitude attained.
Transport and storage
Lightning arresters are filled with SF6 or nitrogen gas under pressure in the factory.
They are also fitted with a moisture filter.
Maintain the lightning arrester in a vertical position during transport and storage.

35 Hertz, Heinrich Rudolph
[br]b. 22 February 1857 Hamburg, Germanyd. 1 January 1894 Bonn, Germany[br]German physicist who was reputedly the first person to transmit and receive radio waves.[br]At the age of 17 Hertz entered the Gelehrtenschule of the Johaneums in Hamburg, but he left the following year to obtain practical experience for a year with a firm of engineers in Frankfurt am Main. He then spent six months at the Dresden Technical High School, followed by year of military service in Berlin. At this point he decided to switch from engineering to physics, and after a year in Munich he studied physics under Helmholtz at the University of Berlin, gaining his PhD with high honours in 1880. From 1883 to 1885 he was a privat-dozent at Kiel, during which time he studied the electromagnetic theory of James Clerk Maxwell. In 1885 he succeeded to the Chair in Physics at Karlsruhe Technical High School. There, in 1887, he constructed a rudimentary transmitter consisting of two 30 cm (12 in.) rods with metal balls separated by a 7.5 mm (0.3 in.) gap at the inner ends and metallic plates at the outer ends, the whole assembly being mounted at the focus of a large parabolic metal mirror and the two rods being connected to an induction coil. At the other side of his laboratory he placed a 70 cm (27½ in.) diameter wire loop with a similar air gap at the focus of a second metal mirror. When the induction coil was made to create a spark across the transmitter air gap, he found that a spark also occurred at the "receiver". By a series of experiments he was not only able to show that the invisible waves travelled in straight lines and were reflected by the parabolic mirrors, but also that the vibrations could be refracted like visible light and had a similar wavelength. By this first transmission and reception of radio waves he thus confirmed the theoretical predictions made by Maxwell some twenty years earlier. It was probably in his experiments with this apparatus in 1887 that Hertz also observed that the voltage at which a spark was able to jump a gap was significantly reduced by the presence of ultraviolet light. This so-called photoelectric effect was subsequently placed on a theoretical basis by Albert Einstein in 1905. In 1889 he became Professor of Physics at the University of Bonn, where he continued to investigate the nature of electric discharges in gases at low pressure until his death after a long and painful illness. In recognition of his measurement of radio and other waves, the international unit of frequency of an oscillatory wave, the cycle per second, is now universally known as the Hertz.[br]Principal Honours and DistinctionsRoyal Society Rumford Medal 1890.BibliographyMuch of Hertz's work, including his 1890 paper "On the fundamental equations of electrodynamics for bodies at rest", is recorded in three collections of his papers which are available in English translations by D.E.Jones et al., namely Electric Waves (1893), Miscellaneous Papers (1896) and Principles of Mechanics (1899).Further ReadingJ.G.O'Hara and W.Pricha, 1987, Hertz and the Maxwellians, London: Peter Peregrinus. metal-enclosed switchgear
switchgear assemblies with an external metallic enclosure intended to be earthed and complete except for external connections
NOTE The metal-enclosed switchgear is subdivided into three types:
– metal-clad switchgear;
– compartmented switchgear (with one or more non-metallic partitions);
– cubicle switchgear
[IEC 61992-1, ed. 2.0 (2006-02)]
metal-clad switchgear
metal-enclosed switchgear in which components are arranged in separate compartments with metal partitions intended to be earthed
NOTE 1 This term applies to metal-enclosed switchgear with metal partitions providing the degree of protection (or higher) included in IEC 61992-6 and having separate compartments at least for the following components:
– each main switching device;
– components connected to one side of a main switching device, for example, feeder circuit;
– components connected to the other side of the main switching device, for example, busbars; where more than one set of busbars is provided, each set is in a separate compartment.
NOTE 2 Metal-enclosed switchgear having metal partitions and meeting all the requirements of NOTE 1 may utilise an insulating shutter barrier as a part of a shutter arrangement, the combination of which provides the degree of protection included in Table 1 of IEC 61992-6 (or higher) and satisfies the requirements of the standard for partitions and shutters made of insulating material.
[IEC 61992-1, ed. 2.0 (2006-02)]
compartmented switchgear (with non-metallic partitions)
metal-enclosed switchgear in which components are arranged in separate compartments as for metal-clad switchgear, but with one or more non-metallic partitions providing the degree of protection (or higher) included in Table 1 of IEC 61992-6
NOTE Metal-enclosed switchgear in which the main circuit components are individually embedded in solid insulating material can be considered as an alternative, provided that the conditions specified in IEC 60466 are met.
[IEC 61992-1, ed. 2.0 (2006-02)]
cubicle switchgear
switchgear, other than metal-clad and compartmented switchgear
NOTE This term applies to switchgear having a metal enclosure and having
– a number of compartments fewer than required for metal-clad or compartmented switchgear, or
– partitions having a degree of protection lower than those indicated in Table 1 of IEC 61992-6, or
– no partitions.
– appareillage recouvert de métal;
– appareillage à compartiments (avec une ou plusieurs cloisons non métalliques);
– appareillage d’armoire.
– chaque appareil principal de connexion;
– les éléments constitutifs connectés à une face de l'appareil principal de connexion, par exemple le circuit d’alimentation;
NOTE Ce terme s’applique à l’appareillage ayant une enveloppe métallique et ayant:
– soit un nombre de compartiments inférieur à celui exigé pour les appareillages recouverts de métal ou à compartiments;
– soit des cloisons d’un degré de protection inférieur à ceux du Tableau 1 de la CEI 61992-6;
– soit pas de cloisons.
