1891-1954Nacido en Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, actor, tanto de teatro como de cine, empieza a dirigir a comienzos del sonoro. Su primera pelicula, co-dirigida por Ernest B. Schoedsack, que co-dirigira tambien, al ano siguiente, la mitica King Kong, es El malvado Zaroff (The Most Dangerous Men, 1932), muy estimable. Obtuvo exitos notables con Domador de sirenas (Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid, 1948), producto Universal, con una jovencisima Ann Blyth, y El milagro de las campanas (The Miracle of the Bells, 1948), producto RKO, melodrama acido, con un inverosimil Frank Sinatra en el papel de sacerdote. Pero la mejor pelicula de Pichel es, sin duda, Destination Moon (Con destino a la Luna, 1950), basada en una novela de Robert A. Heinlein, obra maestra del cine de fantasia espacial, resultado de su relacion con George Pal, productor de la pelicula.
