1. Искривл. своб. поверхность жидкости в месте ее соприкосновения с поверхностью тв. тела. М. образ. у стенок сосудов, в каналах-порах губч. тел, пропит. жидкостью и т.д. Кривизну м. определяет соотношение сил межмолекул, взаимодействия на границе трех фаз: тв. тела, жидкости и газа (пара). Жидкость, смачив. данную поверхность, образует вогнутый м., несмачив. — выпуклый. В 1-м случае взаимное притяжение молекул жидкости (когезия) слабее их притяжения молекулами поверхности тв. тела (адгезии). Во 2-м — наоборот, силы когезии преобл. над силами адгезии. Давление паров над вогн. м. ниже, а над вып. выше, чем над плоской поверхностью жидкости. Этим объясняется, напр., явление капилл. конденсации, капилл. всасывание жидкости в пористые и волокн. материалы и др.
2. В оптике вып.-вогн. (или вогн.-вып.) линза, огранич. двумя сферич. поверхностями. М., толщина к-рого в центре больше, чем на краях (положит. м.), — собир. линза; при толщине на краях больше чем в центре (отрицат. м.) — рассеив.линза. М. использ. во всевозможных оптич. системах (напр., кино- и фотоаппаратов, микроскопов и пр.).
