He later moved to Pavia as Professor of Medicine and soon became engaged in the development of his procedure for inducing artificial pneumothorax in the treatment of tuberculosis. He treated his first case using this technique in 1882, and by 1894 he was able to report a series of forty-five cases in which a cure had been facilitated. 118 Goldberger, Joseph
SUBJECT AREA: Medical technology[br]b. 16 July 1874 Giralt, Hungaryd. 17 January 1929 Washington, DC, USA[br]American physician, virologist and epidemiologist, pioneer of egg viral culture and of the social approach to the aetiology of disease.[br]Of immigrant stock, Goldberger entered the College of New York in 1890 as an engineering student. In 1892 he transferred to medicine, and in 1895 he qualified at Bellevue Hospital. Following an internship and unhappy experience of private medical practice in Pennsylvania, he qualified for the US Public Health Service in 1899, remaining there until his death.By 1910 he had been involved in field investigations of yellow fever, dengue and typhus. It was during this time that, with J.F.Anderson, he developed the egg culture techniques which enabled the demonstration of the filter-passing measles virus. The work with which he was most identified, however, was in connection with pellagra, at that time thought to be of microbial or protozoal origin. Using epidemiological techniques, he was able to demonstrate that it was in fact a nutritional deficiency disease, inducing the disease in prison volunteers on an abundant but protein-deficient diet.[br]Bibliography1910, with J.Anderson, Experimental Measles in the Monkey, Public Health Report RG90, US Public Health Service, National Archives.Further ReadingR.P.Parsons, 1943, Trail to Light. 119 Tossach, William
SUBJECT AREA: Medical technology[br]b. c. 1700 probably Perthshire, Scotlandd. after 1771 Alloa, Scotland[br]Scottish surgeon, the first to report a case of artificial respiration by mouth.[br]Little is known of Tossach (a Tossach matriculated at Glasgow University in 1727), but in 1771 he published an account of the resuscitation of a miner, James Blair, who had been rescued from a coal-mine fire. Tossach found "there was not the least pulse in either heart or arteries and not the least breathing could be observed; so that he was in all appearance dead, I applied my mouth close to his, and blowed my breath as strong as I could: but having neglected to close his nostrils all the air came out of them: Wherefore taking hold of them with one hand and holding my other on his breast at the left pap I blew again my breath as strong as I could, raising his chest fully with it; and immediately I felt six or seven very quick beats of the heart." Blair recovered consciousness in an hour and walked home within four.[br]Bibliography1771, "A man dead in appearance recovered by distending the lungs with air", Medical Essays and Observations, Edinburgh.Further Reading1794, Transactions of the Royal Humane Society from 1774–1784, London.
