νήδυμος ὕπνος, kommt bei Hom. zwölfmal vor, Iliad. 2, 2. 10, 91. 187. 14, 242. 253. 354. 16, 454. 23, 63 Odyss. 4, 793. 12, 311. 366. 13, 79. Hieran schließen sich Hom. hymn. Ven. 172 Batrachom. 47; bei Sp. einzeln, z. B. Quint. Smvrn. 2, 163; Sext. Empir. adv. math. 7, 273, mit Anspielung auf Homer, νηδύμῳ κατασχεϑέντες ὕπνῳ. Aristarch leitete νήδυμ ος von dem verneinenden νη–. und δύομαι ab, vgl. ἀμφίδυμος; νήδυμος ὕπνος also ein Schlaf, aus dem man nicht heraus kann, ein tiefer, fester, gesunder Schlaf, wie νήγρετος, mit welchem Worte νήδυμος Odyss. 13, 79 verbunden ist, καὶ τῷ νήδυμος ὕπνος ἐπὶ βλεφάροισιν ἔπιπτεν, νήγρετος ἥδιστος, ϑανάτῳ ἄγχιστα ἐοικώς. S. über Aristarchs Ansicht Scholl. Aristonic. Iliad. 2, 2. 10, 187. 16, 454. 23, 63 Odyss. 4, 793. Aus diesen Scholien geht hervor, daß es im Alterthum eine v. l. ἥδυμος gab, ἥδυμος Nebenform von ἡδύς, ἥδυμος ὕπνος = der süße Schlaf. Diese Form ἥδυμος, oder vielmehr mit Digamma Fήδυμος, hält Buttmann in der sehr tüchtigen Abhandlung Lexilog. 1 S. 179 für die ursprüngliche Lesart im Homer, aus welcher sich nach dem Verschwinden des Digamma durch Mißverständniß und Irrthum die Lesart νήδυμος herausgebildet habe, schon sehr früh. – Spätere Dichter scheinen die Form νήδυμος in der Bedeutung »süß«, »angenehm«, »lieblich« gebraucht zu haben; Hom. hymn. Pan. 16 δονάκων ὕπο μοῦσαν ἀϑύρων νήδυμ ον; Anth. Plan. 217 Καλλιόπη μὲν ἐγώ· Κύρῳ δ' ἐμὸν ὤπασα μαζόν, ὃς τρέφε ϑεῖον Ὅμηρον, ὅϑεν πίε νήδυμος Ὀρφεύς. – Vgl. ἥδυμος und νηδύμιος.
