От французского mal à propos (некстати, невпопад). Mrs Malaprop — персонаж пьесы 'The Rivals' («Соперники») Р. Шеридана (1775 г.). Эта женщина славилась ошибками в употреблении английских слов, когда старалась создать впечатление своей воспитанности и образованности. Она, например, путала слова allegory и alligator (аллегория и аллигатор), epitaph и epigram (эпитафия и эпиграмма). Современными malapropisms в английском языке являются flaunt и flounce (афишировать и броситься), cortege и corsage (кортеж и корсаж), aperient и aperitif (слабительное и аперитив). Подобная путаница часто используется в юмористических телевизионных программах, в частности в sitcoms (комедии ситуаций). -
