истРасправа с одобрения самочинного суда, обычно заканчивавшаяся экзекуцией предполагаемого преступника. По одной из версий, название связано с именем вирджинского фермера Чарлза Линча [Lynch, Charles] (1742-1820), который в конце XVIII в. таким образом расправлялся со своими противниками-тори [ Tories]. По другой, считающейся более обоснованной, - с именем капитана ополчения Уильяма Линча [Lynch, William]. В период освоения Фронтира [ Frontier] линчеванию подвергались главным образом похитители скота, что отчасти было вызвано отсутствием судов. После Гражданской войны [ Civil War] оно окончательно приобрело форму внесудебной расправы, и с 1882 по 1951 так было убито около 5 тыс. человек, из них 3,5 тыс. негров. После 50-х гг. зарегистрированы лишь единичные случаи, в основном в сельских общинах Юга [ South], где они происходили на расовой почве и были связаны с деятельностью Ку-клукс-клана [ Ku Klux Klan], провоцировавшего расправы над неграми. Единственный регион, где не было судов Линча - Новая Англия [ New England] -
