A two-fold cotton warp dress fabric, with mohair weft of rather coarse counts. The warp is yarn-dyed and the cloth cross-dyed. During the finishing process the weft is thrown to the surface, entirely covering the warp by reason of the warp being pulled straight and the weft bending. All cotton cloths are sometimes sold as lustres. They are woven from bleached warp about 2/40's and soft spun dyed weft about 12's. As many picks as possible are put in.

  • 8 Apou Fabric

The decortication of the fibre is carried out by hand, and they can be separated to almost the fineness of silk. The fibre is remarkably white and almost equal to bleached cotton in colour. It also has a lustre which excels linen in this respect. The cloths made vary from very fine muslin type, up to heavy plain, such as 60 X 60, 14/14 (cotton counts)

  • 12 Alpaca (Extract Wool)

Alpaca "wool" weft is obtained by disintegrating fabrics made of mixture materials, and may contain animal and vegetable fibres. The term is also applied to a lustre fabric woven with a cotton warp and alpaca wool weft, plain weave. When dyed in solid colours it is cross-dyed, the cotton warp being dyed before weaving, and the piece is piece-dyed after leaving the loom. The warp is usually 2/80's Egyptian. The cloth wears well and not liable to gather dust, so is used for linings and men's summer coats. A typical cloth is woven 56-in., 72 X 70, 2/80/ 28's alpaca. The true alpaca is a long, white or coloured smooth hair obtained from the Auchenia paco of South America (see Alpaca Wool)

The warp is composed of alternate ends of viscose rayon and dull lustre acetate (Albene, the dull lustre Rhodiaseta yarn). The weft is three-fold worsted yarn. When cross-dyed the fabric shows different shadings between the alternate picks. A dull lustre finish is given to the cloth.

  • 14 Grass Cloth (Canton Linen)

A plain weave fabric made in China from ramie yarns. It is woven on hand looms in coarse reeds and with few picks. The natural lustre of the yams is not interfered with, as the fabric is used in the loom state. A small quantity is dyed blue, or bleached and used for dresses, but the bulk of the cloth is used for table covers in the loom state. Widths are 15-in. or 16-in. and lengths 30 yards, made on native looms. A fabric made of yarn spun from nettle fibre was also known as grass cloth.

  • 15 Mercemsed Cotton

Cotton yarn or fabric to which lustre is imparted by treating it under tension with caustic soda. This mercerised cotton yarn has a greater affinity for dyes than unmercerised. Most mercerised yarns are two or more fold and the singles are specially spun and gassed prior to doubling. Mercerised yarns are spun with less twist than ordinary yarn in order to increase the lustre of the yarn. The cotton used is usually good Egyptian. The mercerising process increases the strength of the yarn by about 30 per cent, and decreases the weight about 5 per cent.

  • 16 Mohair Brilliantine

A lustre dress fabric made from two-fold cotton warp, yarn dyed, and mohair weft, cross-dyed after weaving, usually 30-in., 35/40 yards, 2/60's cotton warp and 16's mohair weft. The cloth is very similar to " Lustre Orleans," but of a closer texture.

  • 17 Schreiner Finish

A special finish used largely in the finishing of black cotton sateens, Italians, etc. It is obtained by means of a machine similar to but heavier than a calender. A steel bowl is engraved with fine diagonal lines varying from about 150 to 350 per inch, depending upon the finish required. Two bowls are used, the top engraved steel and the bottom compressed cotton. Great pressure is applied to the bowls in order to emboss the fabric with the fine lines. As a rule the fabrics for Schreinering are mercerised beforehand. The lustre on the finished cloth is greatly enhanced by Schreinering. The best lustre is obtained when the engraved lines on the bowl run as nearly as possible parallel with the individual fibres in the yarn. The Schreiner effect is not permanent, it is removed by washing.
