Watts's definition of "stirrup-leathers" agrees with that of Santamaría, who notes the presence of an intrusive /r/ and assignment of the masculine to a term originally accorded feminine gender. He also indicates that it may refer to the saddlehorn (sometimes called the apple or manzana). The DRAE observes that this form arose through a blend of ación and arzón, the latter derived from the Latin arcionis 'forepart or bow of the saddletree.' -
