    On ne trouvera ici que quelques indications générales sur la façon de s’adresser à quelqu’un et de parler de quelqu’un en utilisant son titre. Pour les titres militaires, ⇒ Les grades, et pour les autres titres, consulter les articles du dictionnaire.
    Comment s’adresser à quelqu’un
    Dans la plupart des circonstances ordinaires, l’anglais n’utilise pas d’équivalent de monsieur, madame etc.

    bonjour, monsieur
    = good afternoon
    excusez-moi, madame
    = excuse me
    pardon, monsieur, pourriez-vous me dire…
    = excuse me, could you tell me…
    Les mots Mr, Mrs, Miss et Ms sont toujours utilisés avec le nom de la personne; on ne les utilise jamais seuls.

    au revoir, mademoiselle
    = goodbye, Miss Smith
    bonsoir, monsieur
    = good evening, Mr Smith
    Attention: Ms permet de faire référence à une femme dont on connaît le nom sans préciser sa situation de famille. Il n’y a pas d’équivalent français:
    bonjour, madame ou bonjour, mademoiselle
    = good morning, Ms Smith
    Les anglophones utilisent les prénoms beaucoup plus volontiers que les francophones. Lorsqu’en français on dit simplement bonjour, en anglais on précise souvent good morning, Paul ou good morning, Anne etc. De même, au début d’une lettre, un anglophone écrira facilement Dear Anne, Dear Paul etc., bien avant que le Français n’en vienne à utiliser le prénom.
    Les mots Madam et Sir ne sont utilisés que par les vendeurs des magasins, les employés de restaurants, d’hôtels etc. Ils sont toujours utilisés sans le nom propre:

    bonne nuit, monsieur
    = good night, Sir
    En anglais, le titre de doctor est utilisé pour les docteurs de toutes disciplines. Mais on ne peut l’utiliser seul, sans nom propre, que pour un docteur en médecine.

    = good morning, Doctor Smith (en médecine ou d’une autre spécialité)
