    Mardi Gras ist das amerikanische Äquivalent zu Karneval oder Fasching. Dieses Fest geht zurück auf die französischen Kolonisten in New Orleans (im späteren Staat Louisiana). Obwohl die meisten Leute heutzutage Mardi Gras mit New Orleans in Verbindung bringen, wird es auch in Biloxi/Mississippi und Mobile/Alabama gefeiert. In New Orleans feiern die krewes - Karnevalsvereine während der Saison viele Partys und Bälle und veranstalten am Faschingsdienstag einen Umzug.
