Director de fotografia entre 1914 y 1920, ya en 1915 comienza una carrera como realizador que solo se interrumpira en 1949, despues de casi 35 anos y unas 140 peliculas, casi todas ellas de genero, entre las que se pueden citar las que tienen como personaje protagonista al detective Charlie Chan. Como director de westerns muestra cierto primitivismo en la puesta en escena, sin duda porque la mayor parte de los que realizo corresponden a la epoca temprana del sonoro, que no fue capaz de trascender.
