(Дж. Арбетнот. История Джона Булля - 1727 г.) John Bull (John Arbuthnot. History of John Bull). In der unter diesem Titel erschienenen politischen Satire des englischen Publizisten J. Arbuthnot treten einige europäische Länder unter allegorischen Namen als Menschen auf. England führt den Namen John Bull (= "Hans Stier"). Der Ausdruck ist zu einem Spottnamen des bürgerlichen Englands und des englischen Bourgeois geworden. In politischen Karikaturen wird John Bull als ein rothaariger, untersetzter Mann, oft in der Stellung eines Boxers, dargestellt. -
