Appelée aussi ISO Latin, la norme ISO 8859 (ISO: Organisation internationale de normalisation) régit les variantes de l’ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) prenant en compte les caractères accentués de quelques langues européennes. L’ASCII original constitue un sous-ensemble de ces variantes. La série correspondant au français est l’ISO 8859-1 (Latin-1), dont la version en cours est publiée en 1998 (ISO 8859-1:1998). -

Basée à Genève (Suisse), l’ISO (Organisation internationale de normalisation) définit les normes permettant de faciliter l’échange international des biens et des services. L’ISO a également pour tâche de développer la coopération internationale dans divers domaines (économique, intellectuel, scientifique et technique). Des normes ISO régissent entre autres l’ASCII-Latin-1 (ASCII: American standard code for information interchange), l’ISBN (international standard book number) ou l’UNIMARC (universal readable machine cataloguing). -

Publié par l’ANSI (American National Standards Institute) en 1968, aux débuts de l’informatique, avec actualisation en 1977 et en 1986, le code ASCII (American standard code for information interchange) est un code standard de 128 caractères traduits en langage binaire sur sept bits (A est traduit par "1000001", B est traduit par "1000010", etc.). Les 128 caractères comprennent 33 caractères de contrôle (qui ne représentent donc pas de symbole écrit) et 95 caractères imprimables: les 26 lettres sans accent en majuscules (A-Z) et minuscules (a-z), les chiffres, les signes de ponctuation et quelques symboles, à savoir les touches du clavier anglais ou américain. L’ASCII permet donc uniquement la lecture de l’anglais et du latin. Par la suite, des variantes de l’ASCII (norme ISO-8859 ou ISO-Latin) prennent en compte les caractères accentués de quelques langues européennes. La variante pour le français est définie par la norme ISO 8859-1 (Latin-1). A partir de 1998, l’ASCII est concurrencé par l’Unicode, qui permet de traiter toutes les langues de la planète, en attribuant à chaque caractère (ou idéogramme) un code unique sur 16 bits. L’Unicode est utilisé par exemple pour les fichiers texte des versions récentes de Windows, le système d’exploitation de Microsoft (Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP et versions suivantes), alors que les versions précédentes utilisaient l’ASCII. Toutefois l’ASCII se porte toujours bien. A ce jour, l’ASCII sur sept bits est le seul format compatible avec 99% des machines et des logiciels, et pouvant être converti dans de nombreux autres formats. Le format de fichier correspondant est le format TXT, et son extension de fichier est ".txt.". -
