L’indexation consiste à attribuer à un document un code de classement et une liste de mots-clés. Le code de classement est destiné à la recherche physique (sur les rayonnages) ou la recherche informatique. La liste de mots-clés est destinée à la recherche dans une base de données informatisée, appelée catalogue en ligne ou encore OPAC (online public access catalogue). Nombre de bibliothèques francophones utilisent RAMEAU (Répertoire d’autorité-matière encyclopédique et alphabétique unifié), un ensemble hiérarchisé de mots-clés géré par la Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF). L’indexation est complémentaire du catalogage qui, lui, consiste à rédiger la notice bibliographique du document. -
