Слово like представляет собой один из наиболее интересных случаев грамматической омонимии. Оно может быть глаголом ( I like plums), предлогом ( It's so like him) и даже существительным ( Like is gazing at like). Like как частица развилось, очевидно, из предлога. Эта частица употребляется обычно после слов, к которым относится, и считается характерной для снижено разговорного стиля. Использование частицы like сигнализирует о колебании говорящего в выборе средств выражения, ее функцию можно определить как указание на приблизительность описания. В русском языке анализируемой английской частице хорошо соответствует частица как бы (Минченков, 2001), тоже выражающая приблизительность описания:
