4 huarache
(Sp. model spelled same or guarache [warát∫e] from Tarascan)Carlisle: 1899. A crude open-toed sandal made of rawhide or leather strips, commonly worn by poor mestizos or Indians. The DRAE references guarache and huarache as Mexicanisms for crude sandals made of leather. Santamaría gives a similar definition for guarache. Cobos refers to guarache as "a sandal with a tire-casing sole," which is how they are manufactured today. Cowboys may not have worn these, but would have been familiar with this footgear among the poorer Mexicans they dealt with.Alternate forms: guarache, guar-rache, huaracho.
