The Highland kilt and is called by this name because it is smaller than the plaid ( beag = Little in Gaelic). It is a short, heavily pleated skirt worn by Scottish Highlanders, as a separate garment. It is believed that the kilt was originally that part of the plaid worn below the belt, and became a separate garment about the time of James VI. It is made of tartan check cloth in the pattern peculiar to the class to which the wearer belongs. The word kilt is more used in England than elsewhere. -

This is a very rough cotton cloth, made in India from native-spun yarns. A much lower quality cloth than any shipped from Lancashire, but is produced so cheaply that the poorer natives can afford to buy it. The qualities vary considerably and one sample was 44 ends and 40 picks per inch, 18's T., 18's W. The weft varied from 10's up to 32's. Heavily sized warp is used and the cloth is the commonest used in India (see Khadi)
