3 -to tell o to say?-
Nota d'usoPer introdurre un discorso indiretto, si possono utilizzare i verbi “to tell” e “to say”, che significano entrambi dire. Tuttavia “to tell” richiede sempre un oggetto, cioè occorre indicare a chi è stato detto qualcosa: Mi disse che era malata, she told me she was ill (non she told she was ill). Quando non si vuole o non è necessario specificare l'oggetto, si usa “to say”: Disse che era malata, she said she was ill. Anche “to say” può avere un oggetto, ma la costruzione è “to say”+“to”+oggetto: Devi dire queste cose ai tuoi genitori!, you have to say these things to your parents! -
4 -to say (passive)-
Nota d'usoCon verbi come to say, to think, to believe è possibile usare la costruzione passiva to be said, to be thought, to be believed + to + infinito, che si traduce in italiano con una forma impersonale: He is said to be a good actor, si dice (o dicono) che sia un bravo attore; ha fama di essere un bravo attore; High speed is thought to have been the cause of the accident, si pensa (o si ritiene) che l'incidente sia stato causato dall'elevata velocità; The people arrested are believed to belong to a terrorist group, si ritiene che gli arrestati appartengano a un gruppo terroristico; John was believed to be innocent, si credeva che John fosse innocente (o John era ritenuto innocente). -
5 -disinterested o uninterested?-
Nota d'usoL'aggettivo disinterested significa “disinteressato” nel senso di “imparziale perché non personalmente coinvolto”: Let us hear what you, as a disinterested observer, have to say, ascoltiamo quello che hai da dire, in qualità di osservatore imparziale. L'aggettivo uninterested invece significa “disinteressato” nel senso di “non interessato”: I am uninterested in politics, non mi interesso di politica.English-Italian dictionary > -disinterested o uninterested?-
