Im Verlauf der Breitenkreise gibt es Ringkräfte, die im Scheitelbereich der Kuppel i. d. R. Druckkräfte sind. Kuppel, deren kreisförmiger Grundriss mittels sphärischer Dreiecke, die Ausschnitte aus einer Kugelfläche sind, in einen quadratischen Raumgrundriss überführt wird. Die Pendentivs ("Hängedreiecke") sind nicht Bestandteil des Tragsystems der Kuppel, wirken aber räumlich mit ihr zusammen. Bedeutende Kuppelbauwerke sind Pendentivkuppeln: z. B.
