62 -assurance o insurance?-
Normalmente “assurance” significa assicurazione nel senso di promessa, parola: Mi hanno dato la loro parola che l'assegno arriverà entro la fine della settimana, they gave me their assurance that the cheque would arrive by the end of the week. -

64 -can o to be able to?-
Nota d'usoQuando si parla di abilità al presente l'uso di can o to be able to è indifferente dal punto di vista grammaticale. Tuttavia, normalmente si tende ad usare can: Can you drive?, sai guidare? a meno che non ci siano delle condizioni per cui ci siano dubbi sulle capacità di una persona in un particolare momento. Se la persona a cui ci si rivolge non si sente bene, ad esempio, si preferisce usare to be able to: Are you able to drive?, sei in grado di guidare? Al passato semplice, le due forme possibili sono could e was/were able to. Se si vuole sottolineare un'abilità in generale, non c'è differenza d'uso: I could (o was able to) swim when I was five, sapevo nuotare a cinque anni. Se invece si pone l'enfasi su un risultato da ottenere, si deve utilizzare was/were able to o, in alternativa, il verbo to manage: Were you able to (o Did you manage to) get a newspaper?, sei riuscito a prendere un giornale? (non Could you get a newspaper? che sarebbe inteso come una richiesta: prenderesti un giornale?). Al futuro e nei tempi composti è possibile utilizzare solo la locuzione to be able to: I haven't been able to finish the report, non sono riuscito a finire la relazione; I'll be able to finish by Friday, riuscirò a finire entro giovedì. -
65 -compare to o compare with?-
Nota d'usoTo compare to e to compare with sono talvolta considerati sinonimi, ma alcuni li distinguono. To compare to viene usato per enunciare preferibilmente delle somiglianze: The poet compared life to an adventure, il poeta paragonò la vita a un'avventura, mentre to compare with si usa per spiegare anche somiglianze, ma soprattutto differenze: Prices have risen by only 2% this year compared with 5% two years ago, i prezzi sono cresciuti solo del 2% quest'anno, a differenza del 5% di due anni fa. In modo intransitivo, soltanto to compare with è corretto: The salary he earns at home does not compare with (mai to) what he might earn abroad, il salario che riceve nel suo paese non è paragonabile a quello che guadagnerebbe all'estero. -
66 -nostalgic o homesick?-
Nota d'usoPer esprimere il sentimento di nostalgia di casa, famiglia o paese di origine, in inglese si usa l'aggettivo “homesick”: Sentì nostalgia di casa per la prima volta dopo tutti gli anni passati all'estero, she felt (o was) homesick for the first time after all the years she had spent abroad. Il sostantivo inglese “nostalgia” e l'aggettivo corrispondente “nostalgic” si riferiscono solo alla nostalgia per il passato: Si sentì nostalgica e desiderò essere di nuovo giovane, she felt nostalgic and wished to be young again. Il sentimento generico di nostalgia può essere espresso anche con il verbo “to miss”: Ho nostalgia dei miei amici, I miss my friends. -
