Одна из наиболее распространенных аквариумных рыб из семейства карпозубых (Cyprinodontidae), характеризующаяся живорождением; как объект генетического анализа используется в исследованиях генетических механизмов детерминации пола и др.; на материале Г. впервые было описано сцепленное с Y-хромосомой наследование, хотя дифференцированные по параметрам дифференциального окрашивания XY-гетерохромосомы были описаны у Г. лишь в 1989 М. Шмидом с соавт.
