•• * Не помню, когда на одном из сайтов обсуждалось выражение Ближний и Средний Восток. Не вдаваясь в детали, скажу, что, учитывая некоторую условность таких наименований, в переводе выручить может принятое в ООН – West Asia (можно также South-West Asia). В последнее время, однако, появилось словосочетание ( the) Greater Middle East. Цитата из статьи Уильяма Пфаффа в International Herald Tribune:
•• It is now “ the greater Middle East” that concerns Washington – currently identified by State Department officials as extending from the Muslim Mediterranean states to Afghanistan.
•• Cудя по этому определению, «оно самое». Но по-русски, наверное, будет Большой Ближний Восток – проще и по аналогии с Большой Европой.
