Texas: 1823. Any of a number of grasses growing near mesquite. They are used as forage for animals. The DARE gives a number of plants often called mesquite grass, including grama grass, a velvet grass (including Holcus lanatus), buffalo grass ( Buchloe dacty-loides), one of two needlegrasses ( Stipa viridula or Aristida purpurea), a galleta (either curly mesquite or Hilaria jamesii), or a muhly grass (including Muhlenbergia porteri).Alternate form: mesquit grass. -

According to the DARE, the name of this grass probably comes from the Concho River in Texas, but it may derive from Spanish concho, meaning cornhusk (the DRAE confirms that concho has this meaning in Ecuador). Cobos notes that in New Mexico and southern Colorado, maíz concho is a type of large grain corn. -

DARE: 1931. According to Hendrickson, a perennial range grass found in the Southwest ( Scleropogon brevifolius). It may have been so named because it is so tough only burros will eat it. -

California: 1967-68. Hendrickson references this term, noting that it is a bromegrass of the Southwest ( Bromus secalinus). Also known as devil's darning needle (because it has inch-long needles that catch on clothing). Probably not preferred forage for cattle. -
