    1909-2003
       Nacido en Estambul, entonces Constantinopla, Elia Kazan es uno de los nombres importantes del cine americano. De origen turco-griego, hijo de un comerciante de alfombras, emigra a Estados Unidos con su familia en 1911. Sus origenes artisticos son teatrales, primero como actor, luego como director. Funda, en 1947, el celebre Actor’s Studio. Simpa tizante izquierdista, su claudicacion con el Comite de Actividades Antinorteamericanas le valio, en lo sucesivo, una triste fama, que no debe empanar su im portancia como cineasta, actividad en la que se inicia en 1945 con Lazos humanos (A Tree Grows in Brooklyn). Su esplendida La ley del silencio (On the Waterfront, 1954) trata de ser, en una segunda lectura, una autojustificacion de su actitud ante el citado Comite. La filmografia de Elia Kazan en su totalidad es altamente estimulante. Especial mente conmovedora, su America, America (1963) es, con toda probabilidad, una de las grandes peliculas de todos los tiempos. Los dos westerns que dirigio son, sin duda, atipicos pero muy dignos de consideracion.
