       Guionista, luego director. Hijo del famoso actor Walter Huston; padre de la estupenda actriz Anjelica Huston. Nacido en Nevada, Missouri, fue un nino enfermizo, lo que le obligo a ejercitarse en deportes, llegando a disputar un buen punado de combates como boxeador aficionado. De espiritu inquieto, se dedico a la pintura, a la cria de caballos, al periodismo, a la literatura y a la escritura de guiones. Vivio en Mexico, Paris e Irlanda. Fue actor casi hasta el final de su vida pero, sobre todo, sera recordado como un magnifico director de cine, creador de universos personales y con un gran amor a la vida que se plasmaba majestuosamente en sus peliculas. Algunas de ellas, memorables, permanecen en la memoria de los buenos aficionados al cine. Hay que citar, sin lu gar a dudas, la primera que dirigio, El halcon maltes (The Maltese Falcon, 1941), uno de los filmes inaugurales del cine negro; La jungla de asfalto (The As phalt Jungle, 1950), muestra senera del mismo ge nero; la popularisima La reina de Africa (The African Queen, 1952); la perturbadora Reflejos en un ojo dorado (Reflections in a Golden Eye, 1967), basada en el relato de Carson McCullers; Sangre sabia (Wise Blood, 1979), a partir de la novela de otra importante escritora sudista, Flannery O’Con nor; y sobre to das ellas, la ultima que dirigio, Dublineses (The Dead, 1987), estremecedora recreacion de uno de los relatos del libro de James Joyce. No son estas las unicas peliculas estimables de John Huston, aunque hay que decir tambien que su filmografia abunda en obras de encargo y proyectos fallidos, por lo que hay que considerarla como irregular. Lo mismo que le ocurrio, entre otros, a Preston Sturges y a Billy Wilder, da la sensacion de que el interes que inicialmente tuvo Huston en pasar de guionista a director fue el de tener la oportunidad de dirigir sus propios guiones, evitando asi que otros pudieran estropearlos. No fue, sin embargo, un es pecialista del western, al que se acerco poco pero casi siempre con un planteamiento personal. Si guiendo algunos consejos, incluyo entre estas atractivas muestras del genero Vidas rebeldes, el ultimo filme interpretado por Marilyn Monroe y por Clark Gable.
