La société Adobe lance le logiciel Flash en 1996. "La force du logiciel Flash est d’être apparu en 1996, avant l’explosion du haut débit sur internet, à une époque où la présence d’une image sur une page web pouvait ralentir considérablement son chargement. Le format SWF (shock wave flash) a permis l’affichage vectoriel (donc allégé) de contenus graphiques, interactifs et animés. De plus, un fichier ’.swf’ s’affiche de manière quasi-identique quel que soit le navigateur utilisé (ce qui n’est pas le cas, par exemple, avec le HTML (hypertext markup language) ou le Javascript), et peut aisément être transformé en application auto-exécutable. Sa simplicité, sa souplesse (accrue par son langage de programmation ActionScript) ont donc rapidement séduit les graphistes, puis les auteurs d’hypermédia, jusqu’à conférer à Flash un statut de quasi-monopole."
