Выражение the Third Age означает «третий возраст» и «третий период жизни», т. е. период старости. Считается, что the First Age — годы до поступления на работу, а the Second Age — годы рабочей жизни. Идея «третьего периода» возникла в связи с тем, что значительная часть населения Великобритании старела, но всё ещё оставалась трудоспособной. В 1970-х гг. был создан так называемый University of the Third Age (Университет «третьего возраста»), который в действительности был не университетом, а организацией, занимающейся проблемой способностей и опыта пенсионеров. Образовались (и до сих пор образовываются) группы таких людей в разных районах страны. Они сами разрабатывают учебные программы, организуют курсы, на которых врачи, бухгалтеры, экономисты, юристы бесплатно делятся своими знаниями и опытом, проводя лекции, семинары, дискуссии. Их называют Third Agers.
