    An all-cotton cloth made to imitate linen Hollanda. The warp is all colour, blue and black stripes on a drab ground. Grey or drab coloured weft. Made in stripes and checks. The cloth is finished with a " linen finish," and creased when made up. Shipped to the Philippines. A common quality is 27-in. wide, 45 yards to 50 yards long, 52 ends and 56 picks per inch, 20's T., 20's W., 91/2-lb. 45 yards. Used for dresses, trouserings, etc.

    A plain weave cotton cloth woven with red and blue stripes. The cloth is shipped in a plain finish. About 10 to 20 per cent of colour is usual. Made about 36-in. wide, 72 ends and 60 picks per inch, 28's T. 26's W.

    A worsted dress cloth, 2 & 2 twill weave, low ends and picks, soft and woolly handle, piece-dyed. It is a trade name and claimed to be the finest wool cloth made. Originated by Paul Rodier, a French manufacturer and made from camel hair in 54-in. Today the yarns are a special blend of cashmere and merino wools. The fabric is a vicuna with a kasha finish and is registered under this name.

    A coloured all-cotton stripe cloth, made for South and East Africa. Usually 36-in. wide and in 6 yard ends, shipped loom state or soft finish. Woven matting, 96 ends and 32 picks per inch, 28's black, 24's red, 24's yellow warp yarns, 22's grey weft. The weft is sometimes sized to give a rough feel to the cloth. The warp is all colour, but the black is used sparingly.

    Very fine plain cloths. The original lawn was a fine linen cloth used for dress purposes, but is now known as " linen lawn " (see Boiled Linen Lawn). Indian Lawn is from 30-in. to 36-in. wide, 24 yards long, 72 ends and 64 picks per inch, calendered and made up book fold, or if 40-in. wide in long fold; the yarns are about 50/60's to 60/80's, both American and Egyptian. Victoria Lawn is a stiff-finished lawn, 24/26-in. wide, 92 ends and 92 picks per inch, and similar yarns to Indian lawns. Persian Lawns, 32-in., 24 yard, 100 ends and 100 picks per inch, 60's T., 80's W., and finer, Egyptian yarns, soft finish. Bishops' Lawn - A bleached and finished cloth with a blue tint, similar quality to Victoria lawn. Boiled Linen Lawns - Fine set dress fabric, made from all flax yarns such as 72 ends and 90 picks per inch, 60's/80's lea. Up to 100's lea warp and 140's lea weft is used. In many widths 32-in. upwards. Sheer Lawns - Linen cloths made from green or natural coloured yarns and piece-bleached. These also vary considerably in qualities and up to 100's lea warp and even 160's lea weft is used. Widths 371/2-in. to about 45-in. Lawn was first known in England in Elizabeth's reign, when it was a linen fabric and used for ruffs, shirts, etc.

    A term used in the U.S.A. to distinguish a cotton cloth finished to imitate linen. The cloth is an ordinary plain fabric about 64 ends and 68 picks per inch. The finish is not permanent, but is removed by the first washing.

    An all-silk dress fabric with satin weave, a great number of threads per inch and very fine yarns. A lustrous finish is given to the cloth, but not so lustrous as a satin duchess. The cloth is reversible.

    Originally a moreen was an all-worsted fabric made in Holland with cross ribs and had a moire finish. Now it is a repp cloth woven with coarse cotton warp, and fine cotton weft, and afterwards finished with a moire finish. The weft is much finer than the warp, and twice to three times as many picks as ends are used. Standard makes are: (1) 30-in., 118 yards, 46 ends and 108 picks per inch, 2/24's warp, 40's weft, T.W. 29-lb.; (2) 28-in., 90 yards, 44 ends and 100 picks per inch, 18's warp, 40's weft, T.W. 16-lb.
