Cloths are termed figured when they are ornamented by means of coloured yarn, extra warp or weft, or by a combination of weaves. All jacquard cloths and most dobby cloths are described as figured. -

3 Velvet, Figured
VELVET, FIGUREDThere are many ways of producing figured velvets, the outstanding examples being the handsome textures embodying designs made by weaving three and two heights of pile. The cheapest methods arc by embossing and shearing. In other figured velvets some parts of the cloth are left devoid of pile and in this style the design stands out in very striking relief. When the ground is semi-transparent the effects in dress fabrics are excellent. -
4 Tissue Figured Cloth
Very fine muslins used for curtains, etc., which have large jacquard designs produced by extra weft. The ground cloth is plain open weave muslin made from fine warp and weft. Thick figuring weft interweaves with the ground warp only where required for pattern, and otherwise floats loosely on the back and is afterwards cropped off.Dictionary of the English textile terms > Tissue Figured Cloth
