К ним относят уксусную, пропионовую, масляную, изомасляную, валериановую, капроновую и др. кислоты. Неразветвленные летучие жирные кислоты (уксусная, пропионовая и масляная) образуются при анаэробном брожении углеводов, тогда как метаболизм белков ведет к образованию кислот с разветвленной углеродной цепью: изомасляной (из валина) и изовалериановой (из лейцина). Основным углеводным субстратом, доступным микрофлоре кишечника, служат непереваренные остатки оболочек растительных клеток, слизь. Являясь метаболическим маркером анаэробной условно-патогенной микрофлоры, в норме Л.ж.к. выполняют роль физиологических регуляторов моторной функции желудочно-кишечного тракта. Баланс и динамика их образования существенно меняются при патологических процессах, которые затрагивают микрофлору кишечника. Отдельные Л.ж.к. используются тканями в качестве энергетического субстрата, другие включаются в гликонеогенез и в синтез холестерина (см. холестерин). Они участвуют также в поддержании водно-электролитного баланса в просвете кишки, стимулируют пролиферацию кишечного эпителия.
