unterhalten, u. zwar: I) unterhalten, d. i. darunter halten: subdere, absol. od. unter etw., sub alqd (z.B. subditā face succendere alqd). – II) unterhalten, d. i. 1) die Fortdauer von etwas bewirken durch dargereichte Mittel: alere (ernähren, z.B. ein Heer, copias, exercitus: u. equos, canes; dah. = nichtverlöschen lassen, z.B. ignem; u. bildl., z.B. alcis spem: u. bellum). – sustinere. sustentare (aufrechthalten, erhalten); verb. alere et sustentare. – tueri (im gehörigen Zustande erhalten, bald = gleichs. auf den Beinen erhalten, ernähren, z.B. eo [damit] sex legiones: u. quaerere, unde domi militiaeque se ac suos tueri posset; bald = im baulichen Stande erhalten, z.B. tecta od. sarta tecta aedium [ein Gebäude]: vias, aquas). – fovere (hegen und pflegen, z.B. dolores suos: u. alcis spem). – gerere (bei sich tragen, hegen, z.B. inimicitias, amicitias cum alqo). – das Feuer unt., [2425] flammam materiā alere; alimenta igni dare; materiam igni praebere. – 2) die Aufmerksamkeit beschäftigen: delectare (das Gemüt anziehen, ergötzen). – oblectare alqm od. alcis animum (durch Kurzweil u. dgl. belustigen, z.B. fictis rebus legentium animos: u. se satis commode [recht gut]). – delectatione aliquā allicere (durch einen anziehenden Genuß anlocken, z.B. lectorem). – das Stück unterhält das Volk, fabula oblectat populum. – sich mit od. durch etw. unt., se delectare alqā re. delectari alqā re (z.B. libris); se oblectare alqā re (z.B. ludis). – sich mit jmd. unt., se delectare od. se oblectare cum alqo; redend, s. (mit jmd.) reden, (sich) unterreden: sich mit sich selbst unt., s. ein »Selbstgespräch« halten: jmd.
