12 Knitted Fabrics
Knit fabrics are made with only one series of yarns instead of two as in woven cloths, and the threads are interlooped. There are two classes of knitted fabrics, those termed " weft knitted " and those that are " warp knitted." Weft Knitted - Fig. A shows how plain knitting is accomplished by a succession of loops formed by the same weft thread coursing across the fabric, 1 shows needle loops and 2 shows sinker loops. Fig. B shows 1 & 1 rib knitting where lengthwise wales 1 and 2 are formed, the plain wales 1 show the rib on the back, while the wales 2 show the rib on the face. Warp knitted Fabrics - These are knitted from warp threads running lengthwise of the piece. The diagram shows a simple form of lapping on odd and even wales alternately. Milanese fabric is warp knit. Owing to the method of interlacing warp knit fabrics are non-laddering. ▪ ▪ -
13 Coan Fabrics
Pliny mentions the fact that the women of Cos were in the habit of undoing the silk cloths imported into the Island, and reweaving the silk threads into other fabrics. These fabrics, or the Coan robes, as they were frequently designated, possessed a texture as transparent as that of the Dacca muslins. This method was done because the rulers of Assam and ancient China prohibited the export of silk thread, but permitted woven fabrics to be sent out of the country. -
14 Compound Fabrics
Fabrics in the construction of which more than one warp and one weft are used are termed " compound." A backed cloth is now called compound, although the real compound cloth is composed of two or more distinct cloths. Such fabrics as bags, pillow casing, etc., are compound. Also see pillow cloths, weft and warp balcked fabrics satin back cloths. -
15 Warp Knitted Fabrics
Fabrics knitted on the warp loom. They include plain and fancy locknit, tricot and Vandyke or atlas. Locknit is the most popular by reason of its ladderproof property. These fabrics are closer knitted and stretchless than weft-knitted fabrics. They are used largely for underwear, sportswear, gloves, etc.Dictionary of the English textile terms > Warp Knitted Fabrics

16 Crossbred Fabrics
These are woollen cloths woven from crossbred wool yarns and this type of wool is generally classed in three qualities - fine, medium and low. Fine - The fibre has good length, is uniform, and has a spinning limit of about 48's worsted counts. These are used for coatings, and dress fabrics of a medium quality. Medium - Similar to fine, but of a lower quality and the spinning limit is about 40's worsted counts. Used for such fabrics as Cheviots, and others that require a crisp handle. Low - Spins to about 32's worsted counts, and is used for cheap low worsteds. -
17 Shirred Fabrics
The term applied to fabrics with rubber threads interwoven, such as webbings, suspenders, and some corset fabrics. -
18 Voile Fabrics
Very light open plain weave dress fabrics. The best qualities of voile are made with fine, very hard twisted two-fold combed and gassed cotton yarns. Gassing is done to remove all projecting loose fibres and make the yarn surface as clear as possible. It is a distinctive feature of good voile fabrics that warp ends and weft picks should appear singly in the cloth, that is, with a tiny space between adjacent threads. They are woven one end in a dent. Plain voiles are produced white, piece-dyed in self colours, and printed in huge quantities mostly in dainty colourings and very attractive designs. Various fancy stripes and checks are made with voile ground texture. Standard makes of plain cotton voiles are as follows: - * Combed and gassed Sakel. 38 turns per inch ** Combed Sakel. 38 turns per inch *** Combed and gassed Sakel. 46 turns per inch. -
19 Aeroplane Fabrics
Plain weave cloths, used for making wings of aeroplanes. The cloth must be well woven, and practically without faults. The widths vary from 36-in. to 56-in., and up to 160-ends X 160 picks per inch. A standard cotton fabric is woven 84 X 84 threads per inch of 2/80's warp and weft mercerised yam. A fair quantity has been woven 90/2 reed, 100 picks, from 3/120's warp and weft Sea Islands cotton. Linen yarns made from the best quality of flax have been used in great quantities for the manufacture of these fabrics. Often these cloths are boiled after being woven, which process removes impurities not required and give greater strength with a minimum weight. Finished cloths are afterwards put through a process known as "doping". These linens have a breaking strength very high in both warp and weft in 100's warp, 110's weft boiled yarns. -
