Les noms des "fraternities" et "sororities" sont composés de lettres de l'alphabet grec (Sigma Nu, Phi Delta Theta ou Phi Beta Kappa, par exemple). Ces associations rassemblent des étudiants de milieu culturel et d'origine sociale semblables et permettent à leurs membres d'établir facilement des réseaux de relations. Les étudiants désireux de faire partie d'une "fraternity" doivent être parrainés par des membres et doivent se soumettre à de nombreuses épreuves d'initiation. Au cours des dernières années, le système des "fraternities" et "sororities" fut sévèrement critiqué à la suite de viols, d'agressions racistes et d'incidents liés à l'abus d'alcool. -
