duplex, plicis (duo u. zu plango, plāga), eig. doppelt gefaltet, doppelt zusammengelegt, δίπλαξ, dah. wie zweifältig, als Multiplikativum angebend, wieviel ein Ganzes, einzeln od. nebeneinander, vorhanden sei, διπλοῦς, während duplus, zweifach, als Proportionale angibt, wievielmal eine Größe zu nehmen sei, um das Maß einer andern zu bestimmen, διπλάσιος, weswegen zuw. duplex für duplus steht, aber nicht umgekehrt; beide Begriffe vereinigt das deutsche doppelt, I) eig.: amiculum, Nep., od. amictus, Verg., od. pannus, Hor., ein doppelt um den Leib zu schlagendes Gewand, ein Doppelmantel (δίπλαξ, διπλοΐς): fossa, ein Doppelgraben, Caes.: tabellae, doppelte (künstlich ineinander gefügte) Schreibtafel, Ov.: ficus, die gespaltene u. so getrocknete, Hor. u. Pallad.: clavus, von doppelter Stärke, Cato: ius, aus mehreren Zutaten bereitete Brühe, Hor.: leges, aus zwei Teilen bestehend, Quint.: iudicium, aus zwei Kollegien bestehend, Quint. – poet. a) v. zwei zusammengehörigen Gegenständen, palmae, beide Hände (wie im Griech. διπλοῦς für οἱ δύο), Verg. – b) doppelleibig (aus Pferd u.
