Очень долгое время. По правилам должно быть donkeys' ears (уши), а не years (годы). Ослиные уши, как известно, очень длинные, и именно их изначально упоминали в этом выражении. Замена вполне объяснима, учитывая близость звучания этих двух слов.Whatever happened to John? I haven't seen him for donkeys' years. — Что случилось с Джоном? Я его давненько не видел.
