G. tumb; Germ. dum = stupid, whence Dan. dum; Gr. τυφλός and τυφος are kindred words, the fundamental notion being dusty, clouded]:—dumb, 656 C. 34; dumbir ok daufir, 623. 57: gramm. a mute letter, Skálda 176. In Norway dumine or domme means a peg inside doors or gates.

    II. to chatter, talk, mostly in poetry; esp. in the allit. phrase, drekka ok d., vide Lex. Poët. and drekka; en er þeir áttu of þessa hluti at d., when they were talking of those things, 623. 55.
