       Le SGML (standard generalized markup language) est en fait un métalangage destiné à identifier la structure d’un texte au moyen d’une DTD (document type definition), avec ses caractéristiques telles qu’en-têtes, colonnes, marges ou tableaux, afin de conserver cette structure lors d’applications telles que la PAO (publication assistée par ordinateur) ou l’édition électronique. Les langages HTML (hypertext markup language) et XML (extensible markup language) sont dérivés du SGML. Les spécifications de l’HTML et du XML sont définies par le W3C (World Wide Web Consortium), l’organisme international chargé du développement du web.

       Le format OpenDocument - appelé aussi ODF (open document format) - est un format de document ouvert basé sur le format XML (extensible markup language) et utilisé en premier lieu par la suite bureautique OpenOffice.org. L’extension de fichier est ".odf".Il est désormais développé par le consortium OASIS (Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards). Le concurrent du format OpenDocument est le format Office Open XML (extensible markup language), format propriétaire développé par Microsoft et utilisé dans sa suite Office 2007. En février 2007, Microsoft lance le Open XML Translator, un convertisseur des formats propriétaires de sa suite Office 2007 dans des formats OpenDocument pour permettre l’interopérabilité de ces formats entre eux.

       Le reflowing est une technique permettant de reformater automatiquement un livre et sa pagination en fonction de la taille de l’écran utilisé. Les formats basés sur l’HTML (hypertext markup language) et le XML (extensible markup language) autorisent le reflowing. Le reflowing est possible pour tous les formats dérivant de l’OeB (open ebook), lui-même basé sur l’HTML/XML. Bien que le format PDF (portable document format) ne soit pas basé sur l’OeB, l’Adobe Acrobat version 5 permet de créer des documents PDF autorisant le reflowing, même si la numérotation des pages du document initial reste figée. En mai 2003, la version 6 de l’Adobe Acrobat permet le reflowing sans problème sur l’Adobe Reader, le nouveau logiciel remplaçant à la fois l’Acrobat Reader et l’Acrobat eBook Reader.

       Le livre numérique est la version numérisée d’un livre lisible sur tout appareil permettant sa lecture, que celui-ci soit un ordinateur, un assistant personnel, une tablette de lecture (ebook), un téléphone portable ou un smartphone.
       a) Dans son sens étymologique, un livre numérique est un livre numérisé pour diffusion sous forme de fichier électronique. Chose souvent passée sous silence, le véritable inventeur du livre numérique (ebook en anglais) n’est pas la librairie en ligne Amazon, les éditions 00h00 ou Gemstar International, mais Michael Hart, fondateur du Projet Gutenberg en juillet 1971. Le livre numérique aurait donc déjà 35 ans. Le terme se généralise lors des divers lancements commerciaux dans un format propriétaire ayant émaillé le début des années 2000. En 2003, les "etexts" du Projet Gutenberg deviennent des "ebooks", pour coller à la terminologie ambiante. Un livre numérique du domaine public utilise les formats TXT (text), HTML (hypertext markup language) et XML (extensible markup language), lisibles par toute machine, toute plateforme et tout logiciel.

       b) Dans son sens commercial, le livre numérique est la version numérique d’un livre, vendue comme telle. Le format le plus répandu est le format PDF (portable document format), suivi du format LIT (abrégé du terme anglais "literature") et du format PRC (Palm resource). Mis en ligne en mai 1998, 00h00 (qui se prononce "zéro heure") est la première maison d’édition au monde à commercialiser des livres numériques, à l’initiative de ses deux fondateurs, Jean-Pierre Arbon et Bruno de Sa Moreira. Lancée en octobre 2000 par Denis Zwirn, la librairie numérique Numilog fait elle aussi oeuvre de pionnier en vendant uniquement des livres numériques. La lecture d’un livre numérique sous droits nécessite un logiciel de lecture (téléchargeable gratuitement), par exemple l’Adobe Reader (pour les livres au format PDF), le Microsoft Reader (pour les livres au format LIT) et le Mobipocket Reader (pour les livres au format PRC). Deux variantes du livre numérique sont le livre numérique audio (appelé plus simplement livre audio), qu’on écoute au moyen d’une synthèse vocale, et le livre numérique braille (appelé plus simplement livre braille), lisible sur une plage braille ou imprimable sur une imprimante braille.

    (World Wide Web Consortium)
       Le W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) est l’organisme international de normalisation du web. Il s’agit d’un consortium industriel fondé en octobre 1994 pour développer les protocoles communs nécessaires à la croissance du web et guider ainsi cette croissance en définissant les standards nécessaires. Dirigé par Tim Berners-Lee, l’inventeur du web en 1989, le W3C comprend plus de 400 membres: vendeurs de produits et services, fournisseurs de contenu, entreprises, laboratoires de recherche, organismes de normalisation et gouvernements. Le W3C est par exemple responsable des spécifications du langage HTML (hypertext markup language) et du langage XML (extensible markup language). Le langage HTML est le format de publication sur le web. Le langage XML permet de définir des marqueurs afin de structurer les données d’un document (en-têtes, colonnes, marges ou tableaux) pour publication électronique ou échange de données.

       Un livre numérique dispose d’un format donné, qui permet de le lire sur tel ou tel logiciel de lecture, par exemple le format PDF (portable document format) sur l’Adobe Reader, le format LIT (abrégé du terme anglais "literature") sur le Microsoft Reader, le format PRC (Palm resource) sur le Mobipocket Reader, ou encore le format BRF (braille format) sur un logiciel de lecture braille ou le format DTB (digital talking book) sur un logiciel de synthèse vocale. Ces formats sont le plus souvent dérivés du format OeB (open ebook), un standard de publication de livres numériques disponible en septembre 1999. Formats pionniers, les formats TXT (text) et HTML (hypertext markup language) permettent de lire les textes électroniques quels que soient la plateforme et le logiciel utilisés. Ces formats sont très utilisés pour les oeuvres du domaine public. Un format peut être ouvert, comme le format OeB (open ebook), ou propriétaire, comme le format LIT (literature).
