Федеральный суд первой инстанции. Единственный вид суда в федеральной судебной системе США [ judiciary], который ведет судебные процессы, использует присяжных и выслушивает показания свидетелей. В каждом штате есть, по крайней мере, один такой суд, в некоторых штатах до четырех. Вся территория страны разделена на 89 судебных округов, к которым добавляются "судебный округ Колумбия", и округ Пуэрто-Рико. Каждый такой суд обслуживается федеральными судьями [ district judge] (от 2 до 28), каждое дело рассматривает только один судья (в некоторых исключительных случаях - трое).
