δεξιτερός, poet. = δεξιός, rechts; das Wort ist eigentlich eine Comparativ-Bildung, wie ἀριστερός; der Accent, eigentlich δεξίτερος, wurde geändert, δεξιτερός, Herodian. Scholl. Iliad. 16, 415, um die Abänderung der Bdtg anzudeuten; denn ursprünglich heißt δεξιτερός = »mehr zum Empfangen oder Fassen geschickt«, δέχομαι verwandt, s. δεξιός und δέκα; dies »mehr zum Empfangen geschickt« wurde als Bezeichnung zunächst der rechten Hand gebraucht, sodann überhaupt als Bezeichnung der rechten Seite. Dasselbe Suffix wie in δεξιτερός findet sich im Latein. dexter, dextera und dextra; wenn in der Stammsylbe dex. das E nicht bloß durch Position, sondern auch schon an sich lang ist, dēxter so muß angenommen werden, daß der Bindevocal I, welcher im Griechischen δεξιτερός an seiner eigentlichen Stelle steht, im Lateinischen dexter in die Stammsylbe hinübersprang, deixter (us) anstatt dexiter (us), und dann mit dem kurzen E der Stammsylbe in ein langes E zusammengezogen wurde, dēxter(us); diese Annahme stützt sich auf eine große Zahl von Analogieen; wäre das E in der Stammsylbe von dexter nur durch Position lang, an sich kurz, so wäre der Bindevocal I im Lateinischen dexter als durch Syncope entfernt zu betrachten. Bei Homer findet sich δεξιτερός öfters, z. B. ἐγγύϑι δὲ στὰς χεῖρ' ἕλε δεξιτερήν, καὶ ἐδέξατο χάλκεον ἔγχος Odyss. 1, 121; δεξιτερῆς ἕλε χειρός Iliad. 7, 108; δεξιτερῇ δειδίσκετο χειρί Odyss. 20, 197; καὶ λάβε γούνων σκαιῇ· δεξιτερῇ δ' ἄρ' ὑπ' ἀνϑερεῶνος ἑλοῠσα λισσομένη προσέειπε Δία Iliad. 1, 501, δεξιτερή substantivisch = »die Rechte«, statt »die rechte Hand«, vgl.
