Rather è d'uso abbastanza formale e dà spesso una sfumatura negativa: fa piuttosto freddo qui dentro = it's rather cold in here. Fairly, quite e somewhat non introducono alcuna connotazione: sta piuttosto bene = he's fairly well; il suo ultimo romanzo è piuttosto bello = her lastest novel is quite good; il prezzo è piuttosto alto = the price is somewhat high.
