107 Virginia Colony
истВирджинская колония, (традиционно Виргинская колония)Первая английская колония в Северной Америке. Названа в честь английской "королевы-девственницы" ["Virgin Queen"] Елизаветы I. Колония была создана в местах традиционного проживания племен поухатан [ Powhatan], чероки [ Cherokee], саскуэханна [ Susquehanna] и др. Попытки создания колонии были впервые предприняты испанцами в 1570, когда они создали недолго просуществовавшую миссию на р. Йорк [York River]. В 1584 Уолтер Роли по приказу Елизаветы I предпринял экспедицию, которая создала на о. Роанок [ Roanoke Island] колонию, которой суждено было стать "исчезнувшей" [Roanoke Colony, Lost Colony]. 20 декабря 1606 группа поселенцев численностью 143 человека под предводительством Дж. Смита [ Smith, John] отправилась в будущую колонию на трех судах Лондонской компании [Virginia Company of London, London Company]. Высадившись 26 апреля 1607, они основали поселение Джеймстаун [ Jamestown], с которого началось развитие колонии. Из первых 105 колонистов 73 умерли от голода и болезней за первые 7 месяцев. Однако колония выжила. В 1610 ее укрепил губернатор барон де Лавэрр [ De La Warr, Thomas West, Baron], а в 1612 по инициативе Дж. Ролфа [ Rolfe, John] поселенцы стали выращивать табак и вывозить его в Англию; тогда же в колонии стали использовать труд африканских рабов. Периодически возникавшие с индейцами конфликты были временно погашены браком Ролфа с дочерью вождя Поухатана [ Powhatan I] Покахонтас [ Pocahontas] (1614), но уже в 1622 в результате неожиданного нападения на колонию индейцев погибли 347 поселенцев. В 1619 Джеймстаун стал местом проведения заседания законодательного органа колоний - Палаты горожан [House of Burgesses] и до 1698 был столицей Вирджинии, а после пожара столица была перенесена в Уильямсбург [Colonial Williamsburg, Williamsburg]. К 1635 численность населения в колонии, перешедшей в 1624 в ведение короны [royal colony, Royal Colony of Virginia], составляла около 5 тыс. человек. 1676 ознаменовался восстанием под предводительством плантатора Бэкона [ Bacon's Rebellion]. Тогда законодатели собрались в таверне Роли [Raleigh Tavern] в Уильямсберге и призвали созвать съезд представителей всех колоний. В мае 1776 была провозглашена независимость Вирджинии. Губернатор укрылся на английском военном корабле, издав на его борту приказ об освобождении рабов в надежде на их поддержку. В июне Вирджиния первой из колоний приняла конституцию и декларацию прав граждан [Virginia Declaration of Rights]. Делегаты от Вирджинии П. Рэндолф [ Randolph, Peyton] и Р. Ли [ Lee, Richard Henry] председательствовали на первом и втором Континентальных конгрессах [ Continental Congresses]. Вирджинец Т. Джефферсон [ Jefferson, Thomas] составил текст Декларации независимости [ Declaration of Independence], а его земляк Дж. Вашингтон [ Washington, George] был назначен главнокомандующим Континентальной армии [ Continental Army].
