2G (2e génération) est le sigle caractérisant la téléphonie mobile lancée au début des années 1990 et basée sur le standard GPRS (general packet radio service) issu de la norme GSM (global system for mobile telecommunications). La téléphonie 2G est caractérisée notamment par le codage numérique de la voix, l’apparition du SMS (short message service), la consultation possible du courriel et la fonction appareil photo. La téléphonie 2G cède ensuite le pas à la téléphonie 3G (3e génération), lancée courant 2004 et largement utilisée en 2006.
