etwa 1150-1520. "Spitzbogenstil": Nicht länger trägt die Masse der Wand Dach und Gewölbe; an ihre Stelle tritt das Skelett aus Gewölberippen, Strebebogen und Strebepfeiler und eine schlanke Säulen- bzw. Pfeilerarchitektur. Der Spitzbogen in unterschiedlichen Proportionen von Höhe und Spannweite bringt die Unabhängigkeit vom quadratischen Gewölbegrundriss. Reicher Figurenschmuck kennzeichnet die französische Gotik, die deutsche baut hohe Türme mit durchbrochenem Maßwerk. Die Basilika wird von der Hallenkirche mit gleich hohen Schiffen abgelöst. Während in England und in den Backsteinkirchen im Nordosten Europas die Gotik zur Vollendung strebt (Canterbury, Lincoln, Wells, Marburg, Köln, Prag, Ulm, Lübeck, Danzig), beginnt in Italien bereits das Denken der Renaissance. Gotik war ursprünglich ein Schimpfwort. Giorgio Vasari meinte mit "stile gotico" barbarischen Ausdruck (die Goten haben schließlich mehrmals die heilige Stadt Rom geplündert). Goethe revidierte als Student in Straßburg angesichts des Münsters das gleiche Vorurteil, als er für sich den mystischen Gehalt dieser Architektur entdeckte. Konstituierende Elemente sind Licht, Proportion und Klarheit der Konstruktion. In England geht die originale Gotik fast ohne Bruch in die "Neugotik" (Historismus) über. Im 19. Jh. galt in Deutschland die Gotik als urdeutsch und als Stil der Stile, in Frankreich aufgrund der Forschungen von Viollet le Duc wahrheitsgemäßer als urfranzösisch.
